He Has Cancer
How it Started
When we learned that my husband, David, had cancer, I did what I think most wives would do: I went online looking for answers, resources, guidance—anything that might help me figure out what the hell we were supposed to do next.
I found a lot.
I also quickly discovered that much of what I was finding seemed to be written for breast cancer survivors, women, or caregivers navigating a very different experience. And while I could certainly fit into the “woman” category, that wasn’t quite what I was looking for.
So, I decided to document our own journey.
This section of the blog is not just for our family and friends who want to stay up to date. It’s also for the person who may find themselves in the same position I was in just a few weeks ago—sitting at a computer, overwhelmed, searching for someone who understands what it’s like to suddenly hear the words, “Your husband has cancer.”
You’ll mostly hear my voice here, because I’m the wife, the caregiver, the researcher, the organizer, and occasionally the person trying to keep everything from completely falling apart.
But you’ll also hear from David. His perspective matters, too, and whenever he’s willing to share it, you’ll get a glimpse into what this journey looks like from his side.
We don’t have all the answers. We’re figuring this out one day, one appointment, one treatment, and sometimes one completely ridiculous moment at a time.
My hope is that this helps our loved ones stay connected to our journey—and that somewhere along the way, it helps someone else feel a little less alone, a little more prepared, or simply reminds them that they’re not the only ones trying to figure this out as they go.
